Checking building materials for asbestos
Treat appearance as a clue to investigate, not proof. Safe identification combines records, dates, product information, site evidence and—when needed—controlled analysis.
Evidence to collect
Start with original drawings and specifications, later renovation records, product labels, certificates and invoices. Confirm whether the document actually refers to the material and location in the work scope.
Common uncertainty
Similar-looking boards, coatings, insulation and floor materials can have different compositions. Product names and installation dates may narrow research but do not replace a scope-appropriate determination.
Do not create exposure while checking
Do not cut, drill, scrape or break material to inspect it. If sampling is needed, use a competent service with an appropriate method and laboratory chain of custody.
